Setting up a LoRa Network

So, I've been thinking (very preliminarily) about setting up a LoRa network in my city, but I don't know much about the RNode end pf things. There seems to be a bootstrapping issue since RMAP.WORLD indicates that the nearest node to me is about 40km away (and only accessible via TCP). Maybe there are RNodes here that just aren't listed, but I'm not gonna hold my breath on that.
I want to see if I can secure a high-altitude location to set up a (solar powered?) radio that would be publicly accessible, and set up a second radio at home to link my main node to it.
I need to look up the regulations in my country (Canada) to make sure that what I'm planning is legal. Has anyone else done this? Anyone have any tips or suggestions?

Entities on RMAP.WORLD are added voluntarily and so there are a lot of nodes which are not listed there. Although I have not tried it, I have read that it is possible to scan for rnodes. Personally, I have not added my rnode yet, since I don't necessarily want the wrong people snooping around where I have my rnode located.
Hello! I'm doing very much the same thing in St Thomas, Ontario, Canada. I'm using a 10 story apartment building for my setup and am also interested in using solar for power.
As far as distance goes, I've yet to do my own testing, but I've HEARD that someone once got 200KM. I've seen YT videos claiming 20, so you might be interested in using a better antenna or using a lora amplifier. I found one on amazon.ca for $50, its 5V also, so it fits in nice with RPI power requirements.

Honestly, this is all still very much in the purely theoretical realm. I'm still learning and all of my connections into the network are still TCP, but I'm very excited about the prospect.
awesome to see that there's people at least somewhat near me who are doing this thing! i'm very new to Nomadnet / Reticulum and etc, and so far i only connect in via TCP, but i'm very interested in maybe building a few LoRA devices based on the R-Node design published on unsigned.io. i'm in the Trent Hills area, i wonder if there's enough nearby LoRA nodes that i could peer with so i don't have to bootstrap the network here myself lol
